In fairness, the man *did* have an air freshener in his rearview mirror.
Back in 2021, Knock LA published a bombshell 15-part series detailing how the Sheriff's Department in Los Angeles was infested with gang activity. “Sheriff gangs” have tattoos denoting the gang to which they belong, initiation ceremonies that *seem to* involve killing people and a whole lot of other traits that make them people you should really, really not trust with your safety.
But above all that, they’re just pretty shit at their jobs. For example, this sheriff spotted a dude driving around with a window air freshener and decided that it was a danger that needed to be removed from the road. And so, he decided to pull the man over and proceeded to pull him to the ground and beat the hell out of him.
After all that, he charged the assaulted man with resisting arrest. How fun!
When the trial actually happened, the deputy admitted that he had just made his story up and that “numerous other deputies and sergeants helped obstruct the investigation and cover up the misconduct.” He and several others have since been dismissed, though he only pled guilty to one federal felony civil rights violation.
