Ghost Penis. It sounds like the premise of an A24 horror film, but it’s actually a strange and not-at-all-scary physiological sensation that has cultivated a small but passionate (and pretty kinky) movement online.

So what is Ghost Penis? It’s a body transfer illusion, which is the illusion of owning a body part other than one’s own. The most common version of this is Ghost Hand, which was first popularized by an experiment where subjects were shown to identify a rubber hand as their own. Ghost penis is basically that, except it’s a penis.

The idea is that through illusion perception, a person can be convinced that a dildo or some kind of manufactured penis is, in fact, their actual dick. Still confused? The best way to understand may be to see it, which you can do here.

Obvious warning: there are a ton of links below to anatomical and prosthetic penises.

Get the picture?

According to the r/ghostpenis subreddit (which has 30k members), the most common iteration of ghost penis is unsurprisingly sexual, as it functions as a fetish of sorts. It’s often used in femdom (female domination), as women will train their male subs to experience ghost penis and become turned on by stroking their prosthetic penis while their real member remains untouched.

Or having sex while using a strapon instead of their penis.

Sometimes the sub’s real penis is even caged, adding an edging component to the whole thing.

The sexual appeal is that someone can gain the ability to cum simply by their ghost penis being sucked, stroked or fucked. Once they can prove their ability to climax with their ghost penis, which is like a badge of honor. There’s even a sense of pride based on how little stimulation a person needs in order to get aroused.

In fact, on the subreddit, commenters will decry others for not truly committing to ghost penis play. “He was touching her ass lightly, thus he got some stimulus,” one user commented in regards to a video of a woman getting penetrated by her sub’s ghost penis, seemingly implying that this wasn’t a legitimate example.

However, ghost penis isn’t only a phenomenon in the femdom community. Or even the larger domme/sub-community. Some people who don’t have penises at all insist that they can experience ghost penis.

“I’m an AFAB cis woman and sometimes I feel like I have a penis. It isn’t a feeling that happens often, but it has happened enough times in my life for me to take notice and ask about it,” one woman explained in a forum post. “I’m not entirely sure how to describe it, but when I have this feeling it isn’t like a fake penis attached to my body, but a fully functioning penis.”

There’s also a subsection of people who will put a ghost penis around their actual penis when they pleasure their partner. This is often associated with men who struggle with premature ejaculation, with the basic notion being that this will keep their partner satisfied. However, some ghost penis purists insist this is an entirely separate thing since the dick should ideally remain untouched to truly count.

But no matter how they do so, those who dabble in paranormal penis play insist that the experience is incredible. One user wrote how “amazing” it is “when your mind makes the connection with the dildo to your dick.” And the community at large wholeheartedly agrees, with many boldly proclaiming that once you’ve mastered the art of ghost penising, normal stimulation simply won’t compare.

Or as one user put it in a caption of a video of them ghost masturbating, “This feels so much better in my hand than [my own penis] ever did.”
