Brothels have been a thing for a long, long time. 

They were all over medieval times, it seems like half of Paris used to be occupied by them, and people came out to the Old West for more reasons than just the Gold Rush. So it shouldn’t be surprising there remain ads and posters for them. 

Sex has always sold and the creative minds behind these write-ups weren't trying to be subtle. But what do we expect, it was 1873. Reminding clients that they can't "beat the whores" was a proper employee retention plan.
